Is CDKeys legit? The honest answer before you buy (2026)

CDKeys is the store people ask us about most, and the one we don’t list in our comparison. Both of those facts deserve an explanation, so here it is — the honest version, including the parts that argue against buying there.

What CDKeys actually is

A UK-based digital key retailer that’s been trading for over a decade. It sells game keys, Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and platform gift cards, usually well below the official price.

The single most important thing to understand: CDKeys is a retailer, not a marketplace. You are buying from CDKeys itself, from stock it owns. There are no third-party sellers, no seller ratings, no wondering which of forty vendors you got.

That puts it in the same structural category as Fanatical, Instant Gaming and Yuplay — and in a different one from Kinguin, G2A, Gamivo and Eneba, which are intermediaries between you and someone else.

Why retailer vs marketplace matters more than the price

On a marketplace, the risk is distributed across individual sellers and you manage it by reading ratings. On a retailer, there’s exactly one counterparty. That’s better in three concrete ways:

• One support queue. When something goes wrong you open a ticket with the company that took your money, not with a seller who may stop replying.
• No seller roulette. The same product page delivers the same product every time.
• Consistent policy. Refund terms are published and apply to every order.

Where the keys come from — the part nobody likes

CDKeys does not publicly document its sourcing that way, and its catalogue includes titles at prices well below what an authorized distributor typically pays. The widely accepted explanation — the same one behind why keys are so cheap everywhere — is regional sourcing and wholesale purchasing.

What that means in practice:

• Keys almost always work. Revocations exist but are rare and generally tied to specific publisher disputes, not routine.
• The publisher didn’t necessarily intend that key for your country at that price.
• You have no publisher-side recourse. Your relationship is with CDKeys and your payment provider, full stop.

If you require an authorized chain of custody — for a gift, or because you object to grey-market sourcing on principle — this is the point where you should buy elsewhere and pay more. That’s a legitimate position and we won’t argue you out of it.

The region trap

This is the real failure mode, and it’s not fraud — it’s not reading.

CDKeys states the region on the product page. People buy anyway, redeem, and discover the key won’t activate on their account. That isn’t a scam, it’s a spec you skipped, and support has little sympathy for it because the information was there.

1. Read the region line before paying, every time. “Global” or “Region free” activates anywhere. “EU”, “NA”, “UK”, “RoW” do not.
