How to gift a Steam game step by step (2026)

How to gift a Steam game step by step (2026)

Gifting a game on Steam looks simple, but Valve changed the rules years ago and many users still think you can just “buy and send”. There are country restrictions, friendship cooldowns, and cases where the gift option simply won’t appear.

This guide covers the actual 2026 process, what to do when Steam blocks your gift, and why buying a key from an external store is sometimes the best alternative.

What you need before starting

Before clicking “Purchase as a gift”, make sure you have:

  • Been Steam friends with the recipient for at least 3 days. If you added them yesterday, you can’t gift them anything today.
  • A verified payment method — credit card, PayPal or Steam wallet balance. Steam gift cards cannot be used to gift other games (they only add balance to your own account).
  • Confirmed the game allows gifts in their region. Some games (especially regional keys or delisted titles) block the gift option entirely.

Step 1 — Find the game and choose “Purchase as a gift”

  1. Go to the game’s page in the Steam store (not from your library).
  2. Click “Add to cart”.
  3. In the cart you’ll see two options: “Purchase for myself” and “Purchase as a gift”. Choose the second.

If “Purchase as a gift” doesn’t appear, it usually means you already own the game or it has regional restrictions.

Step 2 — Choose recipient

Steam shows your friends list. Only friends who meet the 3-day friendship threshold appear. If the person isn’t listed:

  • Confirm you accepted them as a friend (not just sent the request).
  • Check that 72 hours have passed since the friendship was accepted.
  • If the recipient’s account is new or has restrictions (VAC ban, for example), you won’t be able to gift them.

Step 3 — Message and delivery date

You can:

  • Send now — the gift arrives immediately.
  • Schedule delivery — useful for birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries. The maximum scheduled date is 90 days in the future.

Add a personalised message (optional but recommended — it humanises the gift).

Step 4 — Payment and confirmation

You pay with your usual method. The game becomes linked to the recipient: they can either accept it (added to their library) or decline (in which case you receive a full refund to your Steam wallet). It does not refund to your original card — if you paid by card, the money returns as Steam balance.

Country restrictions that can ruin your gift

Steam applies restrictions based on price differences between regions. This was implemented to stop people buying cheap keys from Argentina, Turkey or Russia and gifting them to Western users.

In 2026, gifts commonly blocked:

  • From the US/EU to accounts in Argentina, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil.
  • From the US/EU to accounts in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia).

If your recipient is in one of these regions, Steam will simply not let you complete the gift.

The alternative: buying an external key

When Steam blocks you, or when you simply want to save money, buying a Steam key from an external store and sending it via chat/email is the solution:

  • Works with any region (global keys activate in any country).
  • Usually 30-50% cheaper than Steam’s MSRP.
  • No friendship waiting period.

Most reliable stores for this: Eneba, Instant Gaming, Kinguin →. Just verify the key is global, not regional. Regional keys may not activate outside their country.

What about Steam gift cards?

Steam gift cards (physical and digital) work differently: they add balance to the recipient’s wallet, they don’t gift a specific game. Useful if you don’t know what they like. Sold in supermarkets, Amazon, gas stations and inside Steam itself.

Our recommendation: if you know what game they want, gift the game directly. If not, gift card. If Steam blocks you, external key.
