The best free-to-play games on Steam in 2026 (and which ones actually stay free)
The cheapest game is the one that costs nothing, and Steam’s free-to-play catalogue is genuinely excellent in 2026. The catch is that “free” covers everything from completely free forever to free until the grind becomes unbearable. This list separates the two.
How we’re judging “free”
Every game here is free to download and play. What differs is what happens after:
- 🟢 Cosmetic-only — money buys skins. Gameplay is untouched.
- 🟡 Free with friction — playable indefinitely, but time or convenience can be bought.
- 🔴 Paid content gates — the free portion is real, but chunks are behind purchases.
Shooters
Counter-Strike 2 — 🟢 The benchmark competitive shooter, free since CS:GO went F2P. Monetisation is entirely cosmetic (skins, cases). Nothing you buy makes you shoot straighter.
Team Fortress 2 — 🟢 Still going after nearly two decades. Free, chaotic, and the cosmetic economy is famous. Bear in mind that the community’s tone and the state of matchmaking vary a lot.
Apex Legends — 🟡 Excellent movement shooter. Legends can be unlocked with in-game currency or bought; battle passes and skins are the money. Competitive play is not paywalled.
The Finals — 🟢 Destructible arenas and a genuinely distinct feel. Cosmetics only.
Overwatch 2 — 🟡 Free hero shooter with battle passes; new heroes have historically been obtainable free, but slower without the pass.
Halo Infinite (multiplayer) — 🟢 The multiplayer is free and complete; only the campaign is paid.
Loot and grind
Path of Exile — 🟢 The deepest ARPG on the market, free, with monetisation in cosmetics and stash tabs. Honest caveat: stash tabs are close to essential if you get serious, so budget €20-30 eventually. The complexity is enormous — glorious or overwhelming depending on your taste.
Warframe — 🟡 Eleven years of content, free. You can grind almost everything; platinum buys time, not power. One of the most generous F2P models ever built.
Destiny 2 — 🔴 The free portion is substantial, but expansions and seasons are paid and gate a lot of the current story. Great to try; expect to pay if it hooks you.
Lost Ark — 🟡 Huge Korean MMO-ARPG. Free entry, deep grind, and the endgame nudges hard toward spending.
Everything else
Dota 2 — 🟢 Free, all heroes unlocked from day one, purely cosmetic monetisation. Also possibly the steepest learning curve in gaming.
War Thunder — 🔴 Beautiful vehicle combat with a grind curve that becomes a full-time job at higher tiers unless you pay. Superb for the first fifty hours.
Brawlhalla — 🟢 Platform fighter, rotating free roster, cosmetics only. Best free couch-multiplayer on Steam.
Naraka: Bladepoint — 🟡 Melee battle royale that went free-to-play and got a second life. Cosmetics plus some hero unlocks.
The honest ranking
If you want games that are free and stay free: Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, The Finals, Brawlhalla, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer.
If you want the most content for zero euros: Warframe, no contest — thousands of hours before money is even a question.
If you’re willing to spend eventually: Path of Exile is the best value in the list, because the money goes to convenience rather than power.
What free-to-play doesn’t replace
F2P is brilliant for filling time, but the games you actually remember are usually the paid ones — and those cost far less than the store page suggests once you compare. A twelve-euro masterpiece beats a hundred hours of grinding for a weapon.
That’s the whole reason we built the comparison: paid games are cheap if you buy them at the right moment, from the right store. Check any game’s real price → — or install the extension and it appears on the Steam page automatically.
